Margaret Speechly Stansfield graduated in home economics from the University of Manitoba in 1919. Throughout her life she worked extensively in areas related to consumer studies. From 1966 to 1986 she answered the toll-free consumer information telephone of the Manitoba branch of the Consumers' Association of Canada from her home. Her professional and volunteer endeavors were directed toward promotion of the quality of consumer life in Manitoba. In recognition of her contributions to the community, she was honored by many organizations including the Consumers' Association of Canada, Winnipeg YWCA, and the Manitoba Home Economics Association. In 1977, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of Manitoba and in 1986 was the first recipient of the Province of Manitoba's annual "Consumer of the Year" award.
